EYECARE PLUS

Evans and McMahon optometrists are members of the EyecarePLUS network.

EyecarePLUS is a selected group of independently owned practices across Australia. To be accredited, these practices have met stringent membership criteria to ensure that they provide professional eyecare plus quality optometric goods and excellence in service.

EyecarePLUS practices must be up to date with the latest techniques and instrumentation for vision examinations and offer all treatment options. They must also provide a wide range of quality optometric frames to suit all budgets and provide a warranty on all spectacle frames.

EyecarePLUS practices are also inspected on a regular basis to ensure that they maintain the highest standards of quality optometric care and service.

As members, EyecarePLUS practices share resources for staff education, as well as exclusive ranges of good value frames and high technology lenses. We are confident that this will then further improve the services that we provide.

Together with the other optometrists in EyecarePLUS practices across Australia, we will be able to offer the advantages of being part of a large optometric group, yet remain independent and able to provide the personalised optometric service that our patients have come to expect.

WELCOME DEREK

Hi everyone! My name is Derek Armour, the newest member of staff at Evans and McMahon Optometrists.

I began my optical dispensing career in 1974 when I started work at Gibb & Beeman in what was then the Monaro Mall in Civic. It was at that practice that I later worked with Leon and Juliet Evans shortly after they graduated from university.

In 1990 my wife and I and our two young children moved to Tamworth, not because we liked country music, but to further my career and to be near some of my family.

Well after 17 years in the country music capital her I am back in Canberra after Leon and my good friend and former colleague Ian Pyett, who many of you will know from the practice, enticed me to return.

I am really excited to be part of the experienced and professional team at Evans and McMahon Optometrists and alongside of Ian and the rest of the dispensing team I look forward to giving you the very best possible attention, service and advice for your spectacle needs.

DIGITAL EYE IMAGES

At our practices we use corneal topography to assist in the diagnosis and management of anterior eye conditions like keratoconus, evaluate the suitability for refractive surgery (eg LASIK) as well as assist in the fitting of contact lenses.

If you are a glaucoma suspect, have diabetes or have the beginning of macula degeneration, retinal photography is helpful in providing accurate documentation of the appearance, in order that the condition can be accurately monitored.

FUND REBATES MAXIMISED

Most health funds provide optical benefits based on a calendar year. If you haven’t yet claimed your health fund optical rebate for this year, you could be about to lose that benefit. This is particularly important for people wanting to update the optical prescription for their general spectacles as well as prescription sunglasses. In such cases, it may be more beneficial for you to claim one pair before the end of December, and the other in the New Year.

So, don’t delay, as you might be able to claim for a new or spare pair of glasses, contact lenses, or even prescription sunglasses.

WHAT IS AN AR COATING?

An anti-reflective coating eliminates nearly all reflections which reduce clarity and look unsightly; it also protects against scratches. Crizal Alizé is the anti-reflective coating preferred by millions of people around the world.

When do I need Crizal Alizé?

  • To cut down on reflected glare when working under artificial light

  • To reduce dazzle when driving at night

  • To prevent annoying ghost images whilst watching a computer or TV screen.

  • To improve the appearance; people will see your eyes not your lenses thus making your spectacles even more attractive.

  • For cleaner lenses with exceptional smudge repellence

Previous anti-reflective coatings would smudge often, requiring repeated cleaning of the lenses throughout the day. Crizal Alizé lenses have a smooth, slippery surface, making them smudge-repellent and much easier to clean. A special layer reduces surface friction on the lens, so water and grease slide off keeping your lenses clearer for longer.

TRANSITIONS FOR YOU

Transitions lenses are the ideal choice for your everyday eyewear, because they are as good as a clear lens but better! Transitions lenses automatically adjust to changing light for everyday convenient protection, everyday visual quality, and everyday visual comfort. With automatic ultraviolet radiation (UV) protection and glare reduction, Transitions lenses are the ideal choice for your everyday eyewear and the single most convenient way for you to protect your eyes and to achieve healthy sight.

Transitions lenses are photochromic lenses that are clear until dangerous UV rays are present. Outdoors, the brighter the sun, the darker Transitions lenses become. They turn as dark as sunglasses by automatically adjusting their level of darkness based upon the amount of UV radiation.

Transitions lenses block 100% of the sun's eye-damaging rays and reduce painful, discomforting glare. Transitions lenses protect on cloudy days, sunny days, and everything in between-every day, year round-whenever invisible UV rays and visible glare are present.

Transition lenses offer unparalleled lens performance in nearly every lens design and material, including shatter-resistant lenses, bifocals, trifocals, and progressive lenses, all in standard and high index materials.

CARING FOR YOUR SPECTACLES

Proper lens and frame care ensure clear vision and comfortable wear. This section presents easy care tips for your spectacles.

Why do my glasses get dirty so quickly? Oily fingerprints, specks of dirt and tiny scratches can reduce the clarity of your lenses. For clearer vision, clean your lenses daily.

What is the best way to clean my lenses? Dip your lenses in warm, soapy water, then rub them gently with their fingers. Rinse to wash away dirt and oil. A gentle dishwashing liquid makes a good cleanser, but avoid using household cleaners or disinfectants, acetone, or soaps with cream. Wipe the lenses gently with a soft, lint-free cloth. The cloth should be cleaned often. Avoid rubbing your lenses with paper towels, silicone tissues, facial tissues or old rags, which may have embedded dirt. These materials can scratch your lenses.

We provide microfibre cleaning cloths with our lenses. These super-efficient cloths are machine-washable, and can be used for cleaning binocular and video-camera lenses, too!

Do I need to clean my frames? You can use the same method to clean both lenses and frames. The temples need to be cleaned often, because they rub against the skin and accumulate oils that can degrade the decorative finish of frames.

How can I make my glasses last longer? To avoid twisting which can alter the frame shape, use both hands when putting on and taking off glasses. Gently grasp the temples (arms) midway with equal pressure, and carefully push the glasses over the ears. To remove eyeglasses, using the same grip, carefully slide the glasses forward. This movement puts little stress on the frame and prevents misalignment.

To prevent damage, close your frames before laying them on a table or other surface. Never lay the glasses lens-side down. When not being used, store the glasses in a case. Never put glasses in a purse, sports bag or other tote bag without proper protection.

Bedroom floors and bathroom counters are no place to store glasses. On the floor, glasses are easily forgotten and stepped on. In the bathroom, lenses can be marked by hair spray, or easily dirtied by cosmetic oils.

Frames will last longer with proper maintenance. Check your frames periodically for loose screws or temple misalignment. With this proper care, your glasses will last longer and feel more comfortable.

Have your glasses adjusted by one of our staff on a regular basis or as needed. And finally, we suggest that everyone keep an extra pair of glasses handy in case of emergency.
